I was attracted to the psychiatry of substance misuse in the early days of my training as a psychiatrist. I witnessed so many patients come into hospital with mental disorders caused by substance misuse either as their main illness or an additional one that compounded and complicated a pre-existing illness. I realised at the time that people with substance misuse needed to be treated with the same respect, empathy and professionalism as those with other mental and physical illnesses. People with drug and alcohol misuse are more likely than not to suffer with other illnesses. I therefore believe that it is important in my role to offer such patients a full assessment that looks at their mental physical health as well as their substance misuse.
I was introduced to the idea of working with The Lighthouse by my colleague Dr Lars Davidsson who has been involved with the centre from its early days. I joined the team in the later part of 2019. I have found the team to be highly dedicated and professional in their dealing with patients. Their attention to the individual needs, challenges and risks of the patient is remarkable. As a member of the team, I always feel welcome and my contributed valued. In return, I am all the time conscious that under every circumstance, I must respect the experience and contributions of other professionals towards our common goal – the patient’s recovery.
In my personal time I enjoy music, personal fitness, sports, current affairs and of course family time.
